Home Remedies for Heartburn

If you're one of the millions of people who suffer from heartburn, be it occasionally (once a month) or chronically (2 to 3 times a week), you may be eager to seek out natural remedies for heartburn. Available drug treatment options, such as antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), can indeed help. But try-at-home natural remedies for heartburn may also have an appeal -- especially if you have been on your medication for some time.

When Do You Need an Antacid?

If you do take an antacid, it should be used only for occasional relief of mild heartburn or indigestion. If you're taking antacids for longer than two weeks, then the heartburn may be caused by a more serious medical problem. It is important that you consult your doctor for a further evaluation. You should see your doctor even sooner if you're experiencing any symptoms severe enough to interfere with your lifestyle. There are some symptoms that should talk to your doctor about.

H2 Blockers for Heartburn Treatment

H2 blockers, which are also called H2-receptor antagonists, are medicines used to reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces. The H2-blockers block histamine's ability to bind to one kind of histamine receptor on cells: the histamine-2 receptor. Learn what H2 blockers are and what they do.

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a group of medications that have been used to decrease the amount of acid in the stomach and intestines. Doctors prescribe PPIs to treat people with GERD, ulcers in the stomach or intestine, or other digestive disorders where the production of stomach acid needs to be controlled.
