I know I'll be sad and lonely and I'll miss my family. What can I do?

It's tough to spend a holiday alone. But just know, there are many people facing the same situation this year. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to make the best of the situation even though it isn't what you want.

If you can connect with your family via video chat, do it. You might find just connecting a couple of times throughout the day helps you feel better. You could even decide to eat at the same time or prepare some of the same recipes so it feels a little more like you're together.

If video chatting isn't an option, create a plan for how you'll spend the day by yourself. You might decide to watch some movies or read a few good books you haven't had time to check out. Or maybe you spend the day doing a hobby.

Just make sure you plan ahead. Having that plan in place can reduce some of the dread you are feeling. And remember that although this year might be tough, next year can be much better.

In the meantime, keep working on ways to combat loneliness this holiday season.
