Research on Deep Brain Stimulation and Alzheimer's Disease

Since there are few medications approved for Alzheimer's and their effectiveness is quite limited, some researchers are looking at other ways to treat this disease. One of those is deep brain stimulation (DBS). While it sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, DBS has been treating Parkinson's with significant success, and research is demonstrating some benefit in Alzheimer's as well.

Deep brain stimulation has been used for several years for people with Parkinson's disease with considerable success in reducing tremors and muscle contractions, as well as improving posture. Now, several studies have been conducted in people with Alzheimer's, with some exciting results.
