| As a practicing allergist, I frequently see patients in my clinic who think they may be suffering from an allergy, but it turns out not to be the case. They may present with a wide variety of symptoms, including nasal issues, breathing problems, and skin complaints. Itching of the skin is a common reason why people come to see me. While the reason why they're itching may certainly be due to an allergy, this isn't the case more often than not. Of course, what I describe as an allergy may be very different than what a non-allergist considers to be an allergy. Finding the cause of itching can be challenging, but the evaluation includes looking for allergies as well as systemic disease process. Treatment of itching involves removal of the cause, if possible, good skin care techniques, and treatment with topical steroid creams and oral antihistamines. |
