While this is true, sometimes more is involved. A person may be suffering from Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR), Refractory Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (Refractory GERD), or Nonerosive Reflux Disease (NERD). Laryngopharyngeal Reflux There are two sphincter muscles located in the esophagus: The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and the upper esophageal sphincter (UES). When the lower esophageal sphincter is not functioning properly, it can be a sign of GERD. If the upper esophageal sphincter doesn't function correctly, it's called Laryngopharyngeal Reflux, or LPR.
