"Only 8 weeks and 3 days until spring!" a friend shouted as we passed outside the gym, me shivering in the dark, arctic-like morning...she bounding by in shorts and a light jacket as though it were 80 degrees and not 28.

There's no doubt there are some (crazy) people who face winter with unfailing optimism. The rest of us struggle to keep exercising through the dark, cold days, which is why I recommend a little retail therapy. Having the right winter gear makes you more comfortable and it may even make you a better person. Case in point: I did not 'accidentally' trip my enthusiastic friend as she bounded by because, I'm convinced, I was feeling mellow in my longest, warmest winter coat.

I make no promises about the next time I see her, though.
