From Daniel More, MD, your Guide to Allergies
Itching is a common reason for people to see an allergist. Many of those with itching have a rash, others do not. Some people suffer from itching for many years, while others have symptoms for only a few days or weeks. So, what causes an itch to occur? Why do some people itch from head to toe, while others itch only in certain areas? If you, or someone you know, has a problem with itching or a rash that won't go away, read the following articles, then see your doctor. You too can be itch free in no time!

Nuts and Bolts of Itching
Pruritus refers to an unpleasant sensation that causes the need to scratch, commonly called itching by most people. Itching may be localized to a certain area of the body, or can be all over, or generalized. When there is a rash that goes along with the pruritus, the cause is usually easily determined and treated. However, the most difficult cases of pruritus are those without an associated rash.

How to Control Itchy Skin
Dry skin plagues people of all ages, but is particularly common in older people. Dry, irritated, itchy skin characterizes a number of skin diseases that are collectively referred to as eczema. Xerotic eczema (xerosis), also known as the winter itch, occurs most often during the dry, cold winter months, as a result of repeated wetting and drying without the use of moisturizing. Symptoms include dry, itchy, flaky, red skin, with painful cracking on the hands and feet.

Types of Allergic Skin Rashes
There are many types of itchy skin allergies and rashes. However, not all rashes that itch are related to skin allergies. The following are the most common types of allergic skin rashes.
