From Ann Pizer, your Guide to Yoga
Don't get worried, we're talking about spinal health here. Let's leave the twerking for the clubs and get down with something a little mellower for the yoga crowd.

Start Small: Pelvic Tilts
If you haven't heard me rave about pelvic tilts, you are really missing something. I just love this exercise. They are a great way to work the kinks out of a stiff spine.

Go Bigger: Cat - Cow Stretch
A cat-cow stretch is basically the same movement as a pelvic tilt, just a little bigger. I often see students doing this stretch leading with their neck. Try to originate the movement in the tail instead. You can also do them in a chair. Like right now!

Yoga Exercises for Back Pain
This series of four poses, including cat-cow, is designed to prevent back pain through improving basic spinal flexibility, strengthening the core and the spinal support muscles, and becoming comfortable with the movements that control flexion and extention of the spine.

Pose of the Week - Marichyasana I
If I have one yoga pet peeve (one? who am I kidding? what? you too? share them here! you'll feel better afterwards!) it's this: getting ahead of yourself. Like when the teacher gives a specific chain of commands, each dependent on the one before it, to get you into a complicated pose. She's saying, "If you can do A, move on to B. When you've got B, try C," but all around are people attempting C without ever mastering A. And the reason I care is that if you skip steps your alignment goes all wonky and your risk of injury increases. Which brings me, in a very roundabout fashion, to marichyasana I. The first step here is the bind with both butt cheeks firmly on the ground. Get that and then and only then move into the forward bend. I know everyone always want to get ahead, but sometimes it's better to stay behind.
