A study examining the SRY genes (thought of as the "master switch" for turning on male sex development in humans) that was about as dense as you can imagine, explained beautifully and even poetically, by a couple of publicists at Case Western Reserve University. Beginning November 1st, some parents in Germany will have the option of leaving the sex of their newborn undetermined on their birth certificates. It's a response that got a fair bit of media attention. Most of it confused.

Germany's new legislation is not introducing a "third gender" as most of the media reported it. Instead it's a specific response to the stalemate between what science tells us about sex and what society would like us to continue to believe about it. The people who get stuck in the middle of these clashing forces are often identified as intersex.
