And if it's dry, wet it." While that is an over simplification, it does describe the limited options for treating skin conditions in the past. In the past 10 years there have been significant breakthroughs in the treatment of many skin diseases. This week's newsletter will cover some of the tried and true treatments and some new discoveries. Vitamin D Deficiency Vitamin D deficiency is a hot topic right now. Shingles Shingles is a painful rash caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Medications to treat shingles must be started within 72 hours of getting a rash to be successful. MRSA Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a strain of the common skin bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus. Unfortunately, MRSA is not killed by the typical antibiotics that kill S. aureus. Fungal Nail Infections Fungal nails are almost always unsightly but for some people they can cause pain and further infection. Creams and lotions don't treat fungal nails, only oral antifungals do.
