One complaint I often hear when people change to low-carb eating is that the grocery bill goes up. While there's no doubt that pasta costs less than meat, there are many ways to eat a healthy low-carb diet that doesn't empty out your wallet. Also, a couple of items caught my eye this week, both of them coincidentally about high-fat "forbidden" foods. I wrote about them on my blog. Have a great week! Laura

Low-Cost Low-Carb
There's no doubt about it, eating low carb tends to make the grocery bill grow as we cut down on cheap starches and sugars. How can we eat in a way that is healthy for us without taking out a loan to do it? Here are some tips for you. I have linked to articles on "the basics", "advanced strategies", and specific pages on categories of foods such as proteins.

Is Cheese Bad?
The vegan group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is at it again, this time with big billboards implying that cheese makes you fat, vividly illustrated with fat limbs and abdomens. The fact that this makes no sense is apparently beside the point.

What Happened to Lard?
Lard used to be a staple in most pantries, and it's apparently gaining a resurgence. Recently, I heard a couple of lard stories: one on NPR called "Who Killed Lard?" talking about the various possible culprits for why so few people cook with it any more (this primarily happened before the Saturated Fat Scare), and another about a German man who had a 64-year old can of lard in his pantry. He had it tested, and it was still edible!
