Poses & Workouts

From Ann Pizer, your Guide to Yoga
Standing poses are usually the meat (sorry, vegetarians) of a yoga session. We spend the most time on them and they help us build heat while improving strength. They can pave the way for intense stretching by warming up our muscles and raising our heart rates. Take a look at three ways to work on standing poses.

Standing Poses Sequence
This is what I would call a classic sequence of standing poses, including warrior poses, triangle, and half moon pose. It's a perfect way to begin your home practice.

Standing Balances Sequence
For even more fire in the quads, move on to this sequence of standing balances. This series has you moving through seven poses while standing on one leg before switching off to do the second leg. A long balancing sequence like this is also good for your core strength.

Pose of the Week - Bird of Paradise
Most of us are lucky enough to have two arms, two legs, a more or less symmetrical configuration of the external body. But in yoga, asymmetry reveals itself all the time. One hamstring or one shoulder turns out to be way more open than the other. A standing, balancing, binding pose like bird of paradise, offers plenty of opportunities to notice how different the two sides of the body can feel. There is a tendency to brand the more flexible side the "good" side and the other side the "bad" side, but try to resist labeling them thus. Noticing a difference without judgement is a nice reminder to apply this attitude to other areas of our lives.
