From Daniel More, MD, your Guide to Allergies
Summer is mosquito season, and we've all experienced the occasional mosquito attack during an evening spent outdoors. But while most people experience a mild itchy bump after a mosquito bite, other people experience severe swelling as a result of being allergic to mosquito bites. For these people, outdoor summer activities can be a pain in the neck -- literally -- as a result of mosquito allergy. Learn all about mosquito allergy, including how mosquito allergy is diagnosed and treated.

Mosquito Allergy
More severe reactions -- rather than the typical itchy red bump experienced by most people as a result of a mosquito bite -- occur less commonly. These may result in blistering rashes, bruises, or large areas of swelling at the bite sites. People who experience extremely large areas of swelling after a mosquito bite (such as swelling of most of an arm or leg, for example) have been dubbed as having "Skeeter Syndrome."

Swelling From Mosquito Bites
I am often asked by patients about localized swelling at the site of an insect sting or bite. Some people are convinced that they have a "severe allergy" to mosquito bites because of the localized swelling that occurs as a result. Others are concerned about a possible "life-threatening reaction" to bee stings because the last time they were stung on the foot, their foot swelled to the point of not being able to put on their shoe.

Best Ways to Deal with Mosquito Allergy
I see some patients in my clinic that swear that mosquitos just have a taste for them. They will be nearly eaten alive by mosquitoes, while their family members and friends won't be touched. These people have some pretty interesting ways of preventing mosquito bites and dealing with the bites when they occur. If you have a mosquito allergy, do you have a trick for avoiding bites or dealing with reactions? Share it here, and learn some useful tips on dealing with mosquito allergy from others.
