Just what is a low-carb diet anyway? There is no one answer to that question - not only do authors and researchers vary on the answer, but each person's body has a different tolerance for carbohydrates. People often want me to tell them exactly how much carbohydrate to eat, but all I can really do is give them some guidelines to help them figure it out for themselves. What is a Low-Carb Diet?
Seems like a simple question, but "what is a low-carb diet?" has been answered in a number of different ways by diet authors and researchers. What does this mean to you? Here are the basics of three main approaches, and the benefits of each.

A Surprise About Grains
I am working on a series of articles for people who don't necessarily want to go on a low-carb diet, but do want to cut back on the amount of carbohydrate they are eating. My most recent one is about grains. When I went to the USDA Web site to see what the Dietary Guidelines say, I was actually surprised by how little they recommend. I think a lot of people out there would do well simply to cut back to the US Dietary Guidelines! Who would have thought?

Low-Carb Diets and Weight Training
About a year ago, my About.com colleague who writes about weight training wrote an article about how bad low-carb diets are for his readers (truth to tell, he often gets digs in about low-carb eating). At that point, I invited him to a discussion on my blog about this. Although I would slightly revise a couple of my statements to make them clearer, I think the conversation was interesting and productive.
