I often get emails from folks looking for advice on which yoga poses they should do to help them with a particular health problem. And while sometimes a specific pose can help, I tend to take a more holistic view. Establishing a consistent practice is an important part of improving overall health, which in turn often causes improvement in chronic conditions. So while there is no single pose that will put you right to sleep, yoga can play an important part in helping you get a better night's sleep.

Yoga for a Better Night's Sleep
If you have a hard time getting to sleep at night, incorporating yoga into your life can help, especially if your insomnia is stress-related.

Yoga Nidra
Yoga nidra is a set of deep relaxation/meditation techniques that many people find effective in helping them get to sleep. Although it's great to go to yoga nidra classes, you can also practice at home using guided meditations on CD.

Pose of the Week - Scale Pose - Tolasana
Ever feel like your arms aren't long enough to lift up in scale pose? As you can see from the photo, having the shoulder slide away from the ears is key to getting that extra length. Most of the lifting then comes from the abdominal muscles engaging to move the legs off the floor, but if you are having trouble getting a feel for it, try the pose with a block under each hand.
