How an Allergist Can Help With Your Allergy Symptoms

 Most people with allergies don't see an allergist. This may occur for many reasons, but the most likely reason is that people don't know what an allergist can do for them. Instead, many people suffer with allergy symptoms without knowing the cause of their symptoms or how best to deal with their allergies. Other reasons why people don't see allergists including the use of over-the-counter medicines, treatment by a primary care doctor, or the lack of availability of a local allergist. Most people with allergies should be able to see an allergist at least once, and the benefits to such a visit are plentiful.

What an Allergist Can Do for You 
An allergist/immunologist is a medical doctor with specialty training in the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases, asthma, and diseases of the immune system. To become an allergist, a person must attend college (four years) and medical school (four years), and undergo residency training in either internal medicine or pediatrics (three years each). The physician then must pass a difficult exam to become board-certified in either of these fields.

Questions to Ask Your Allergist 
Once you’ve decided to see an allergist, your first step is finding a reputable one in your area that you can have a good relationship with. If your primary care doctor is referring you to an allergist, then you will probably see an allergist that your doctor is familiar with. Otherwise, you can find an allergist through one of the two national professional organizations for allergists in the United States: The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI), or the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).
