| | It can, and often does, take many years to get a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Often this is because people with BP only seek help when they are depressed, not recognizing their hypomanic or manic episodes as being unusual. It was that way for me and, I suspect, for many of you. This week's lead story, though, is about someone who had a far different experience. | | The Doctors Didn't Believe Me As a child with bipolar symptoms in the early 1960s, she was told by one doctor that she just "needed to grow up." As an adult, she suspected she had bipolar disorder. She researched the symptoms, and they fit. Yet doctor after doctor failed to diagnose her. | Illness, Injury or Surgery - The Effect on Bipolar Disorder A serious illness might lead to a depressive episode. An injury could do the same - or perhaps make a person angry enough to precipitate mania or hypomania. Fear of surgery might lead to rapid cycling.
