| | Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction characterized by symptoms of hives and swelling, asthma symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, and even low blood pressure. The causes of anaphylaxis are numerous, including foods, medicines, insect stings and bites, latex and other causes. Anaphylaxis can also occur during pregnancy, which can result in a life-threatening situation for the unborn child. The most common causes of anaphylaxis during pregnancy include medications (such as penicillin and related antibiotics) as well as latex exposure. The treatment of anaphylaxis during pregnancy is much the same as for anaphylaxis during non-pregnancy. | | Anaphylaxis During Pregnancy Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction, caused by the release of allergic chemicals such as histamine from allergic cells such as mast cells. Causes of anaphylaxis include foods, medications such as penicillin and NSAIDs, latex and insect stings and bites. Symptoms of anaphylaxis can include urticaria and angioedema, symptoms of asthma, nausea/vomiting and diarrhea, and low blood pressure. Anaphylaxis can also occur during pregnancy, especially during labor and delivery, and can represent a special danger to the fetus, because low blood pressure related to anaphylaxis in the mother can affect blood flow to vital organs in the fetus, such as the brain and heart. Additional symptoms of anaphylaxis during pregnancy may include vaginal and vulvar itching, uterine cramps and low back pain. | Allergic Rashes During Pregnancy Itching, with or without a rash, is a common symptom for many people. Itching can be the result of a skin disease, such as an allergic skin rash, or an internal medical issue, such as liver or thyroid disease. Itching during pregnancy can be caused by a few unique diseases related to being pregnant. Sometimes it may have nothing to do with the pregnancy. Either way, having an itchy rash during pregnancy can add anxiety to an otherwise stressful time for many women. | Treating Allergies During Pregnancy Rhinitis during pregnancy can be due to allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, or non-allergic rhinitis. If the woman has had allergic rhinitis prior to pregnancy, this could worsen, stay the same, or even improve. This change in symptoms may be dependent upon many factors, including the presence of seasonal allergens and increase in pregnancy hormones. The pregnant woman with rhinitis may be concerned about the safety of medications during pregnancy, and therefore avoid taking medications. If avoidance of allergic triggers is not possible or successful, medications may be needed to control symptoms. | Allergies in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Discussion of allergies and asthma in the pregnant and breastfeeding woman, with special focus on pregnancy categories of medications.
