| | Most of the yoga limelight goes to the new hybrid trends and ever-escalating extremes of temperature and athleticism. And while I'm always up for trying what's new, sometimes you just want an old-fashioned stretch, maybe with a little chanting. These gentle yoga styles may not be in the news, but they still have an important part to play on the yoga spectrum. | | Integral Yoga Integral yoga follows the teachings of Sri Swami Sachidananda, who came to the United States from India in the 1960s and eventually founded many Integral Yoga Institutes and the famed Yogaville Ashram in Buckingham, Virginia. Integral is a gentle, hatha practice, and classes often also include breathing exercises, chanting, kriyas, and meditation. | Kripalu Yoga Kripalu is a gentle hatha yoga practice with a compassionate approach and emphasis on meditation, physical healing and spiritual transformation that overflows into daily life. In a Kriplau class, each student learns to find their own level of practice on a given day by looking inward. | Sivananda Yoga Sivananda focuses on the mastery of 12 basic poses, which include backbends, forward bends, twists, and inversions. | Pose of the Week - Chaturanga Dandasana Back when I first started yoga, I remember my teachers always said that you should push back into your heels when lowering into chaturanga dandasana. And I dutifully did as I was told, even though I could never quite reconcile that instruction with the ideal arm position in the final pose, which seemed to require that the shoulders come forward. Well, jump ahead a few years and I'm now hearing a cue that makes a lot more sense: to shift forward on the toes a few inches before lowering down. This really helps get the arms in the best position to form that right angle. I like that this practice is always adapting and refining itself. | | | | Related Searches | | | | Featured Articles | | | | | | Sign up for more free newsletters on your favorite topics | | | | You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to the About.com Yoga newsletter.
