From Marcia Purse, your Guide to Bipolar Disorder
Spring is finally here, and already I'm seeing certain signs of hypomania. As in many years past, I'm spending way too much mail-ordering plants, shrubs and even a tree for my garden. What's really unheard-of is that I ordered myself a bathing suit! I haven't had one for years, since my weight started going up from psych meds and I couldn't get the last suit on. The question now is, do I really want people to see the way my body looks when loose clothing isn't camouflaging it?

A Close Look at Lithium
Here's a profile of Lithium, one of the most commonly used mood stabilizers. The profile outlines what you need to know when taking Lithium, including the most common possible Lithium side effects, necessary tests, precautions and warnings, and use during pregnancy.

Lithium Side Effects
Here's a list of the common, less common and rare side effects that have been found losing Lithium. It's not guaranteed to be a complete list, but I've done my best to include as many as possible.

Why Does Lithium Cause Weight Gain?
Not everyone gains weight on Lithium, but a lot of people do. No one knows why yet, but here are some theories about why that happens.

About Lithium-Induced NDI
If not carefully monitored, and in rare cases, taking Lithium can cause a dangerous and possibly irreversible condition called Lithium-induced nephrogenic (kidney-related) diabetes insipidus (NDI).
