 | This week's newsletter is about language. Well actually it's about fetish sex, fertility, technology, and penis rings. But it's also about language. One of the cons of having so many more platforms for public discussion is that it's become even easier for us to forget how the language we use, the way we talk about things, matter. When everything online is just considered "content" it's easy to ignore that what you talk about is inextricable from how you talk about it. When it comes to sex most people are so relieved to finally get to talk about it at all, that the nuances of language can feel less important. Fair enough. When you think of the word "fetish" you probably think of sex. But there's an important difference between fetish and sex, and between having a fetish, and engaging in what might be called fetish sex. It may not be front page news important, but ask yourself, who decides what goes on the front page?

When Treviny Marie Colon found out about Scenarios USA's contest called What's the REAL DEAL about masculinity she was inspired to write a screenplay about sexual orientation, identity, race, class, and culture in New York City. As one of three winners, Colon's screenplay was brought to life in collaboration with Hollywood director Joel Schumacher. Colon and her fellow winners will be the opening keynote speakers at Sex::Tech, and she took some time out to talk with me about filmmaking, homophobia, and looking at the Man in the Mirror.
