| | I'm ready to call the yoga memoir the new hot trend and I, for one, could not be more pleased. Most of the instructional yoga books I look at offer pretty much the same-old, same-old. But yoga memoirs are unique by definition, and when the writing is funny and honest, they are a pleasure to read. Check out a few offerings below. | | Poser: My Life in 23 Yoga Poses In Poser, Claire Dederer uses the twenty-three yoga poses as a springboard to guide us through her life story, beginning with her discovery of yoga as a new mother. The story moves both into the past and the future and is buoyed along by Dederer's exceptional writing, which is poignant, yet funny in the right places. | Stretch: The Unlikely Making of a Yoga Dude Neil Pollack's memoir follows his trajectory from doughy skeptic to registered yoga teacher, with many a wry, outsider's perspective on the funny business of yoga in between. | Your Yoga Memoir A chance to write your own yoga memoir, provided you can do in in 1000 characters or less. Share your own story of how you got into yoga. | Pose of the Week - Handstand - Adho Mukha Vrksasana Early in my yoga career, I injured my hamstring with an overly enthusiastic attempt to kick up into a handstand. I've been a little gun-shy ever since, gamely kicking up when the pose is taught in class, but never knowing if I'm going to get there or not. Since my second kid, it's been "not" quite a lot, so I was surprised last week when a handstand came easily for the first time in a few years. I just love how this practice changes and evolves all the time. Sometimes you work hard to get a pose (this was my method with headstand many years ago), and sometimes you just get one for free. Until the next class, that is. | | | | Yoga Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | More from About.com | | | | | | Discover the Disney Dream Disney's newest cruise ship has something for every family member, from the Aqua Duck watercoaster to adults-only lounges.
