From Marcia Purse, your Guide to Bipolar Disorder
Introducing "Messengers of the Brain," my latest article giving you the lowdown on neurotransmitters. Within the article is the illustrated story "GABAs on the Move" where you'll meet Glenn and Gertrude GABA and their co-workers as they race to deliver messages that keep information flowing through the brain.

Understanding Neurotransmitters - Messengers of the Brain
Maybe you know that Paxil is a "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor" (SSRI), but does that term really tell you anything? Here, in an easy-to-understand format, is an explanation of how neurotransmitters like serotonin are supposed to work, and what can go wrong so that a medication might be needed. It's all made clear by dressing molecules in uniforms, putting enzymes on motorcycles, and putting in a coffee shop.

Bipolar and Anxiety Disorders
Two studies published offer significant insights into the relationship between bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders, and the connection between these and substance abuse. The presence of an anxiety disorder, cocaine use and/or alcohol abuse along with bipolar disorder is very likely to make a patient's overall condition much more serious.

What is a Hormone?
In human biology, a hormone is a substance produced by one gland or organ that travels through the bloodstream to produce an effect on other organs, tissues, etc.

Oh, Those Meds!
