About

From Denise Maher, your About Women's Health Editor
Raise your hand if you've figured out how to achieve life balance. Do you feel good about the amount of time and energy you put into your relationships, lifestyle (fitness, diet, mental, spiritual) and hobbies compared to your investments in work, financial and caregiving responsibilities? Do you feel good about what you get out of those efforts? Anyone? Anyone? It's tricky. Finding balance is a tough goal. Whether you are trying to improve your cholesterol, build your core muscles to help prevent injuries or enhance a yoga practice, achieve family/work balance, reduce stress, or just carve out more time for yourself, success is slippery and elusive for many women. Balance is a long-term goal, more idea than reality. Luckily, our guides have a few tricks to help you get closer to balance--or at least cope when you don't achieve it.

Women, Stress and Balance
When women are faced with multiple roles, all of which carry heavy demands, they face levels of stress that are high enough to contribute to health problems, missed work, and a diminished capacity to take on more. Finding balance--of the roles we play and an "inner balance"--can be challenging, but it is vital to women's health and wellbeing. Your Balancing Act

In Search of Stability ( How NOT to Fall Down)
Based on slow, rhythmic body movements and deep breathing, Tai Chi has been investigated for its potential for improving sleep, and helping conditions like diabetes, chronic fatigue, bone mass loss, and stress reduction. Because of its focus on the shifting of body weight in a deliberate and relaxed way, it appears to improve balance and strength without the joint impact that often comes with more vigorous exercise.
