| When I read this article in the Washington Post about why men are less likely to do yoga than women, a few things jumped out at me. Like how it's such a cliche that men go to yoga class to see hot women in tight pants. And, more importantly, the idea that men don't do yoga because they fear the unknown. I don't think that's only true of men, nor do I think that everyone has to jump on the yoga bandwagon (or the kale bandwagon. What's up with that one?). But it's one of my primary objectives on this site to make yoga less scary for people of any gender who have been wanting to try it but have felt a little something holding them back. |

Like any subculture, yoga has its own set of customs, some from long-standing tradition, others just a matter of common courtesy. Getting the inside scoop can empower you to step outside your comfort zone to try a yoga studio class. | Yoga Tips for Beginners
More knowledge, more power. Includes what to wear, what to bring, what to expect and more. | Pose of the Week: Legs Up the Wall With No Wall
In yoga classes, it's important to listen to your own body first and make responsible decisions about which poses are not a good fit for your body. This sometimes leads to an awkward situation where you're left on your mat unsure of what to do at the class proceeds into a pose you are skipping. As you get more familiar with yoga, you'll be able to make your own substitutions when necessary. If you are taking a pass on inversions such as shoulderstand or headstand, I suggest you try legs up the wall with no wall instead. You don't need to move over the to wall to do this version of the pose. If you have a block handy, try placing it under your sacrum if that feels good. Now just hang out until the class moves on to the next posture and you can join back in. | |
