Many people experience prolonged nasal symptoms this time of year -- nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose and sinus pressure may last for days or even weeks. Various medications may be taken in order to treat these symptoms, but the problem can go on and on. What do these symptoms represent? When is a cold something more, like allergies or even a sinus infection? The answer isn't always obvious, even to an expert. Here are some points to consider...

Cold vs Allergy: How to Tell the Difference
The symptoms of the common cold and nasal allergies are often very similar, so it can be difficult to tell the two apart, even for a physician. Nasal congestion, runny nose, post nasal drip and sneezing can all be symptoms of nasal allergies or of the common cold. Other symptoms, as well as the timing or pattern of symptoms, and the response to various medicines are all a clue to determining whether symptoms are due to allergies or the common cold.

All About Sinus Infections
Sinus infections, also called sinusitis, are defined as inflammation of one or more sinuses. Sinuses are hollow cavities within the bones of the face. The sinuses are lined by mucous membranes that normally produce fluid – this fluid usually drains into the nasal passages and is swallowed throughout the day. However, when the drainage sites for the sinuses are blocked, the sinuses cannot drain, and an infection may develop.
