From Daniel More, MD, your Guide to Allergies
Many people aren't aware that makeup allergy exists, and it's more common than you think. From preservatives in cosmetics, to various chemicals in hair dye, and from reactions to sunblock containing facial creams, to nickel allergy caused by mascara applicators, makeup allergy is commonplace in my practice. Most reactions to makeup appear as itchy, flaky rashes on the face, especially the eyelids. Patch testing is available to pinpoint the cause of the makeup allergy, so that the culprit chemical can be avoided. Careful use of certain creams for the face can help treat the symptoms of makeup allergy until the chemical can be avoided.

It's possible for an allergy to a substance to develop even after years of using the cosmetic without previous problems... Read more

A large portion of these patients have allergic causes to their symptoms, often due to cosmetics or hair care products that they use in everyday life... Read more

Which Ingredients in Sunscreens Cause Allergies?
Many active ingredients are present in sunscreens that cause contact dermatitis. Some of these chemicals cause more problems than the others. Many sunscreens have multiple active ingredients, so it may be difficult to determine the exact cause without patch testing for the individual chemicals. The following are the most common active ingredients in sunscreens reported to cause contact dermatitis... Read more
