The Arthritis Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has voted 13-2 to recommend approval of Benlysta (belimumab) for the treatment of lupus -- specifically, autoantibody-positive patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus. 
In a study reported at the 2010 American College of Rheumatology annual meeting, researchers used DNA amplification technology to identify what type of bacteria existed in the mouths and intestines of study participants who had rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or were considered healthy. The DNA amplification technology allows researchers to identify 100% of the bacteria present. 
Study results, presented at the 2010 American College of Rheumatology annual meeting, revealed that people with newly-developed rheumatoid arthritis or undifferentiated arthritis could achieve remission after four months of taking a combination of methotrexate and prednisone.
