From Shereen Jegtvig, your Guide to Nutrition
Your body needs minerals that you get from the foods you eat. We're all familiar with calcium and iron, but there are many other minerals you need too. This week, I'll tell you all about the dietary minerals.

Have a great week!

Shereen

The Major Minerals
The major minerals are the six dietary minerals your body needs in the largest amounts. These minerals are necessary for many processes in your body, especially fluid balance, maintenance of bones and teeth, muscle contractions and nervous system function.

The Trace Minerals
These minerals are all essential for good health, but your body only needs a very small amount of each one. These trace minerals are important for immune system function, energy, metabolism and antioxidant protection.

Iron Deficiency
When you don't get enough iron, you are at risk for developing iron deficiency anemia, a condition where your red blood cells can't carry enough oxygen to all the cells in your body.

How Do I Get Enough Calcium?
Dairy products are the best source of absorbable calcium, however there are plenty of non-dairy foods that will give you all of the calcium you need.
