From Ann Pizer, your Guide to Yoga
The approach of Labor Day means that the back-to-school season is upon us. Even if you left with your mortarboard long ago, it's hard not to feel the pull of fresh textbooks and sharpened number 2 pencils. So, what if you were signed up for a full yoga course load? Here's what your reading list would look like (If you have no nostalgia for your school days, feel free to use the suggestions below for your last-weekend-at-the-beach list.)

Yoga 101
Those signed up for Yoga 101 will be required to read Yoga for Dummies, by Georg Feuerstein and Larry Payne. Despite its inauspicious title, this book offers a nice overview of yoga topics by two highly respected yoga teachers. It's good introduction to the history and philosophy of yoga, as well as its modern applications.

Yoga Anatomy
How great would it be to do an entire semester on anatomy for yogis? If you did, your text would undoubtedly be Yoga Anatomy, by Leslie Kaminoff. The amazing illustrations in the book make it easy to see exactly what is going on inside your body during over 60 common asanas.

Yoga Lit
Fiction and memoirs inspired by yoga is another course I'd love to take. The reading list would definitely include Poser, My Life in Twenty-Three Yoga Poses, by Claire Dederer. Dederer is a gifted story teller who uses yoga as a jumping-off point to telling her life story.

Pose of the Week - Down Dog Split
Did you know there are two possible hip position in down dog split? In the hips closed position (see right), your leg will probably not go as high as it could. That's ok, since the focus is on keeping the hips square. If your teacher calls for the hips open position, feel free to let that leg fly, but try to keep the torso from twisting along with it. Here, take a look at this down dog split video. It makes it all crystal clear.
