Oatmeal
Eating a bowl of hot oatmeal for breakfast is a great way to warm up on a cold morning -- and it's good for you. Oatmeal is a whole grain and contains protein, minerals, and a soluble fiber called beta glucan that helps reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the bad kind of cholesterol). Read more

Spelt
Spelt is similar to wheat in appearance, but it has a tougher husk than wheat that may help protect the nutrients inside the grain. The official name of spelt is Triticum aestivum var. spelta. It was originally grown in Iran around 5000 to 6000 B.C., but it has been grown in Europe for over 300 years, and in North America for just over 100 years. Read more

Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are harvested from the Salvia hispanica plant, a member of the mint family that appears to have originated in Central America. The seeds are small, about 1 millimeter in diameter, and they range from brown to gray in color. Read more

Brown Rice or White Rice?
Brown rice is rice that has not had the brown-colored bran covering removed, so brown rice is considered a whole grain. Why remove the bran? Because most people prefer white rice since it is fluffier and cooks faster than brown. Read more
