From Fiona Haynes, your Guide to Low Fat Cooking
Adding ingredients to a bread-making machine is simple and convenient, but there's a real sense of satisfaction at crafting a loaf of bread or serving fresh, hot bagels lovingly kneaded and shaped by hand. You might not want to do it every day, and few of us have the time to do so, but every so often, it's worth carving out a morning or an afternoon and making some delicious homemade bread. The downside: it'll be gone in a flash.

New York-Style Bagels
It's been a number of years since I lived in New York and lined up outside somewhere like H&H bagels for a bag full of hot, fresh bagels. So I decided to see how hard it would be to make my own. I don't pretend they could be mistaken for a true New York bagel, but I do believe these satisfying chewy bagels are closer to the real thing than my packaged bagels from the supermarket.

100% Whole Wheat Bread
I'm not a big fan of packaged whole-wheat bread. To me, most brands taste too sweet. Many packages proudly declare things ike "made with a touch of real molasses," or "naturally sweetened with honey." So I decided to make my own and keep the sugar down. It's not that I lack a sweet tooth; it's just that the bread I ate in England as a child was very much unsweetened, yet not at all bitter. If you prefer more sweetness, by all means add a bit of honey or molasses to this recipe.

White Bread
These days I know we're not supposed to eat a whole lot of white bread -- too many refined carbs and all that. But homemade white bread is a real treat. Packaged bread has a long list of ingredients, many of which are preservatives. The nice thing about homemade bread is that shelf life is never an issue. Just try keeping your fresh-out-of-the-oven bread for more than a day!

Fruit-Studded Soda Bread
You don't have to wait until St. Patrick's Day to enjoy this fruit-studded treat. This yeast-free bread is delicious with afternoon tea.
