From Marcia Purse, your Guide to Bipolar Disorder
I was floored last week when an acquaintance told me her child was starting school the next day. What? Early August? When I was a kid, school didn't start till after Labor Day - and the mother, a generation younger than I, said the same thing. So your bipolar child or teen may well already be in school or about to start. For you and them, here are some tools and information.

Jesse Jackson, Jr.'s Illness Is Bipolar II Disorder
I read a good dozen news stories yesterday about the news that Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., hospitalized for two months, is being treated for bipolar II depression. Not a single one of the stories that gave info about BP II got it entirely right. I also read some columnists who carried on about how he should have told the world his diagnosis sooner. Read my commentary on these issues and also my new celebrity bio of Jesse Jackson, Jr.

School Tools
There are special resources available in the United States to help children with disabilities, including mental illnesses, cope with school. Insist that your school make all the accommodations your child needs.

School Medication Administration
When children need to take medicine at school, how likely are they to get the right medication at the right time and in the right amount? What are your rights as a parent, and how can you help prevent mistakes and keep your child safe?
