Poses & Workouts

From Ann Pizer, your Guide to Yoga
My yoga teacher has a fun way of putting a class together on the fly. He goes around the room and asks each student for a pose or area of the body they want to work on and then puts together a sequence that has something for everyone. Oftentimes, it seem like every other person wants to work on hip openers. Here are a few ways to satisfy that need.

Seated Hip Stretches
Five seated poses that get into the hips, groins, and IT bands. This is a nice sequence to tack on to your sun salutations or standing poses.

Sequence for Hips and Hamstrings
Show your lower body some love with this short routine. Do it each day to work on hip openness and hamstring flexibility.

Pose of the Week - Extended Side Angle
I've mentioned before that I'm not a big fan of mirrors in yoga studios, but even I can admit they come in handy at times. Even though I do my best to position myself somewhere in the room where I can't really see myself in the mirror, every so often I get an eye-opening glimpse. Like, hey, my front knee is nowhere near as deep in extended side angle as I thought it was. Noted, corrected, time to go back to looking at the floor. You can skip the mirror and just go ahead and deepen that knee so the thigh is parallel to the floor.
