Poses & Workouts

From Ann Pizer, your Guide to Yoga
I always do a "pose of the week" on the site and I usually get my inspiration from whatever pose is causing me trouble or feeling really awesome. Just about every week, one of the first poses that pops into my mind in the "really awesome" category is pigeon. If you are also a fan of opening the hips, or it's an area you want to work on, here are some variations on pigeon.

Pigeon Pose
If hip openers are tough of you, let pigeon be all about the props. You really want to be able to experience the stretch here, so use as many props as it takes to get comfortable. For most people, blankets under your butt on the side of the forward leg are a good place to start. On the other end of the spectrum, people who feel good with no props can start to think about incorporating the deep backbend of full pigeon.

Pigeon at Your Desk
Scroll down to the bottom of these desk stretches to see this standing version of pigeon. This is such a great way to stretch out at work after sitting at a computer for long hours.

Flying Pigeon (And Double Pigeon)
This pose is usually called flying crow, but I always think of it as flying pigeon since your legs are in the classic pigeon configuration.

And last but not least, let's not forget the strong hip-opening power of double pigeon. This is another chance to use props if your top knee is quite elevated.

Pose of the Week - Cobbler's Pose
Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Those days of being stuck indoors during the heat of the day with your squabbling kids. If this doesn't sound familiar to you, how lucky you are, and you can still enjoy cobbler's pose at the time of your choosing. Kids like to call it butterfly pose and may be willing to indulge you in a few other fun postures, which may in turn result in better moods all around. Here are some other ways to introduce kids to yoga.
