From Ann Pizer, your Guide to Yoga
Though 2012 had its share of drama in the yoga community (remember Anusaragate and the How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body fall-out?), I'm going to go on record and call it The Year of The Core. Though core work has been creeping into yoga classes for awhile, this was the year that it became ubiquitous. To top it off, I wrote about CorePower Yoga this week.

My Free Week of CorePower Yoga
CorePower Yoga is popping up all over. Founded in Denver, Colorado, in 2002, CPY now has studios in ten states and is growing quickly. So quickly, in fact, that they recently opened two studios in my city within the span of a month. I knew I wanted to check out these new studios in person, but my interest was tinged with trepidation...

Yoga Sequence for Abs
You don't have to do crunches to work on your abdominal muscles. Here's series of ten ab-tastic poses and nary a crunch in sight. Well, there might be a little one at the end.

How Do You Headstand?
How do you come up into a headstand? If you're comfortable coming up (in the middle of the room) one leg at a time or with the knees bent, challenge yourself to try lifting both legs simultaneously and keeping them straight the whole time. You will feel it in your core for sure.

Pose of the Week - Prasarita Padottanasana
In a pose like prasarita padottanasana, it's easy to get distracted by the fact that some people can get their heads to the floor and start thinking that's the goal of the pose. I often see people with their feet really far apart in an effort to get that head to the ground. My teacher recently challenged us to keep the legs at about a ninety degree angle in this pose. That way you get a good hamstring stretch and it's a safer position for the hip joints. To work on the core, you can bend your knees to lower your head to the floor before lifting into your tripod headstand.
