From Daniel More, MD, your Guide to Allergies
Caffeine is a natural stimulant consumed by millions of people in the United States every day. It is found naturally in the seeds of coffee and cocoa plants, and in tea leaves. When consumed, caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, improves the function of the heart and lungs, increases the contraction of blood vessels, and acts as a diuretic (increases the formation of urine). Many of us cannot make it through our day without getting a certain amount of caffeine, found mostly in beverages such as coffee, tea, cola, energy drinks, and foods containing chocolate. For the majority of people, a moderate amount of daily caffeine intake is safe, improves mood and alertness, and aids in productivity. Some people can be allergic to caffeine, separate from an allergic reaction to the food or beverage that the caffeine is in.

Coffee Allergy
Coffee is an extremely popular drink, not only in the United States but around the world, particularly in Europe. The popularity of coffee has grown over the past few decades, likely at least in part due to the success of Starbucks Coffee Company. In the past, coffee was consumed mostly in relationship to meals; people now drink coffee during all times of the day, with or without food, even as a dessert or iced beverage. All told, the world consumes 1.4 billion cups of coffee a day, with the highest consumption being in Europe. With the large amount of coffee being consumed, it would seem that many people would be experiencing allergic reactions as a result of drinking coffee.

Allergies to Herbal Teas
It is well known that having hay fever, or pollen allergy, can lead to allergy to fresh fruits and vegetables; this is called the oral allergy syndrome. There is also some evidence that people with pollen allergies can have allergic reactions to herbal teas and bee pollen.
