Barrett's Esophagus: A Growing Complication of GERD
Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the esophagus changes so that some of its lining is replaced by a type of tissue similar to that normally found in the intestine. While there is a higher risk of developing esophageal cancer in people with Barrett's esophagus, less than 1% of patients with Barrett's esophagus will develop this cancer. While the odds of you developing esophageal cancer is low, it is still important that if you were diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus, you should have regular examinations to screen for precancerous and cancerous cells.
