From Richard N. Fogoros, M.D., your Guide to Heart Health Center
All roads lead to heart failure. No matter what kind of heart disease you develop, if it progresses far enough heart failure is likely to occur eventually.  So it should not be surprising that heart failure is one of the most common cardiac conditions.  Here's what you need to know.

Heart Failure - The Basics
Heart failure is a cardiac condition in which the heart is no longer able to function adequately to meet the body's needs. Because heart failure can be produced by many kinds of cardiac disease, it is among the most prevalent of cardiac problems. Here's what you need to know.

Symptoms of Heart Failure

If you have heart failure, it is important for you to know what kinds of symptoms you can experience. By paying close attention to your symptoms, you can help your doctor optimize your therapy, both to keep your symptoms at bay and to reduce your chances of dying from heart failure.

Dilated Cardiomyopathy - "Typical" Heart Failure

Dilated cardiomyopathy is the most common form of heart failure.

The term "cardiomyopathy" simply means heart muscle disease. In dilated cardiomyopathy (often referred to as congestive cardiomyopathy or congestive heart failure), the heart muscle, for one of many reasons, becomes damaged and weakened. In an attempt to compensate for this weakening, the heart muscle "stretches," causing the heart (especially the left ventricle) to dilate, or enlarge.

Treating Heart Failure Due to Dilated Cardiomyopathy
The treatment of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) - the most common form of heart failure - has improved dramatically over the past several years.

Unfortunately, studies show that many patients with DCM are not receiving the treatments they ought to be receiving. For this reason it is important for you to be aware of the treatment of DCM - if only to make sure your doctor is covering all the bases.
