From Ann Pizer, your Guide to Yoga
Most of the time when yoga is mentioned in the press, it's something along the lines of, how good a workout is yoga or can you lose weight doing yoga. And while these are interesting questions, they are irrelevant to a whole sector of the yoga spectrum. I'm talking about gentle yoga, done for the joy of stretching and stillness of mind, not for the calories burned. If you're looking for a gentle yoga experience, try these styles.

Integral Yoga
Integral yoga follows the teachings of Sri Swami Sachidananda, who came to the United States from India in the 1960s and eventually founded many Integral Yoga Institutes and the famed Yogaville Ashram in Buckingham, Virginia. Integral is a gentle, hatha practice, and classes often also include breathing exercises, chanting, kriyas, and meditation.

Sivananda Yoga
Sivananda Yoga follows the teachings of Swami Sivananda, as brought to the west by his disciple Swami Vishnu-devananda. Vishnu-devananda came to the United States in 1957, making Sivananda an important part of yoga's first wave of popularity outside India. There are now Sivananda yoga centers in major cities in the US and western Europe, as well as nine ashram retreats.

Kripalu Yoga
The name Kripalu is associated both with a style of hatha yoga and a yoga and wellness center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Both were founded by yoga guru Amrit Desai, who came to the United States from India in 1960. Kripalu was named for Desai's teacher, Sri Kripalvananda, a Kundalini yoga master.

Pose of the Week - Flying Crow - Eka Pada Galavasana
When you take a vinyasa-style yoga class, you place yourself fully into the hands of the teacher. He or she decides what postures you will do and in what order. Most of the time, I enjoy this surrender of control, but I do have one pet peeve (try as I might to rise above pet peeves) and it's this: I think I see the sequence building to a certain logical conclusion, an attempt at a climatic pose, and I turn out to be wrong. The moment passes, the pose is not taught, the class continues. Mr. Yoga Teacher, you owe me a flying crow.
