From Marcia Purse, your Guide to Bipolar Disorder
I'm currently taking four medications for bipolar disorder, with one more I can take as needed. At times in my life I've taken several more. Everybody's "med cocktail" is different, and usually people have to have their prescriptions changed as time passes. So this week I bring you information on common - and not so common - bipolar medications, but first ...

Got Old Medications? Don't Flush Them
If you're like me, you have bottles a quarter, a half, or mostly full of pills you're no longer taking. I have lots - both medications I tried that quickly showed they weren't good, or those that were discontinued after longer use. Paxil (Paroxetine)
Paxil is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, commonly known as an SSRI antidepressant. It's in the same family as other well-known antidepressants - Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, Zoloft and Luvox. This profile looks at Paxil in depth.

Symbyax (Fluoxetine and Olanzapine)
Symbyax is a medication that combines the ingredients in the drugs Prozac (an antidepressant) and Zyprexa (an antipsychotic).

Serax (Oxazepam)
Serax is used for short-term relief of anxiety, tension, agitation and irritability. It's also used to treat anxiety associated with depression and with alcohol withdrawal. Serax is a benzodiazepine, and like all medications in that family there is the possibility of addiction if the drug is used too frequently or for too long. It is relatively fast-acting.
