From Marcia Purse, your Guide to Bipolar Disorder
As I've mentioned before, it took a long time for me to get a correct diagnosis of bipolar II disorder, despite years of psychotherapy and counseling and even a hypomanic response to my first antidepressant. Information keeps piling up that this happens to a majority of people who have bipolar disorder.

59% of Psychotherapists Missed Bipolar Diagnosis
In a new study, the majority of psychotherapists presented with a hypothetical patient made a wrong diagnosis anywhere from 43% to 80% of the time depending on the number of hypomanic symptoms presented.

Symptoms of Hypomania
The two symptoms of hypomania that made a correct diagnosis in the study above more likely were reduced need for sleep (47%) and distractability (57%). This article lists all the symptoms that are used as diagnostic criteria for hypomania and thus, bipolar 2 disorder.

Symptoms of Mania
Many of the symptoms of mania are the same as those for hypomania, but there are some important differences, listed in this article.
