But most will agree that Stage 1 is the real thing and should be treated as such. Your prognosis with Stage 1 is very good, even if your emotions are ranging all over the place. Make sure you understand just what having Stage 1 means for you. | What to Expect From a Lumpectomy My lumpectomy went well, with minimal scarring and swelling. But it was hard to tell at first, since I had enough surgical dressings to cover the entire breast! Then there were also those surgical drains to deal with - no fun there. Knowing what you may expect to deal with after surgery can help you prepare for recovery. | Radiation After Surgery Radiation treatments usually follow a lumpectomy. There are several ways to get this done: everything from a one-shot and you're done procedure to a six-week stint of twice-daily zaps.
