From Pam Stephan, your Guide to Breast Cancer
Afinitor has emerged from clinical trials, with positive results. Like all cancer therapies, it has some side effects, but patients are willing to try it, for more time without tumor progression.

FDA Adds Afinitor to Treatments for Metastatic Breast Cancer
On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration announced that Afinitor is now approved for cases of advanced breast cancer. The drug is made by Novartis and is an endocrine therapy that will be used for breast tumors that have developed resistance to aromatase inhibitors.

Afinitor (everolimus) - Drug Description
Afinitor is an mTOR inhibitor, which blocks a specific protein and inhibits tumor growth. Afinitor is a targeted drug therapy, like Herceptin and Tykerb. Patients who took the drug along with their treatments lived longer without tumor progression.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer Benefits from Afinitor
Triple negative breast cancer cells are estrogen-receptor negative, progesterone-receptor negative, and HER2 negative. Since the cancer is not fueled by those hormones, nor by the HER2 protein, standard cancer drugs like selective estrogen receptor modulators, aromatase inhibitors, and Herceptin will not be effective in treating this class of cancer. Afinitor may be effective with TNBC.

You've gotten your initial diagnosis of breast cancer, but don't know much about what to expect. Here is a roadmap for newly diagnosed patients; full of information about diagnosis, tests, emotions, and the many options you may be offered for surgery and treatment. Educating yourself will help you travel this difficult road with confidence.
