The drug is made by Novartis and is an endocrine therapy that will be used for breast tumors that have developed resistance to aromatase inhibitors. | Afinitor (everolimus) - Drug Description Afinitor is an mTOR inhibitor, which blocks a specific protein and inhibits tumor growth. Afinitor is a targeted drug therapy, like Herceptin and Tykerb. Patients who took the drug along with their treatments lived longer without tumor progression. | Triple Negative Breast Cancer Benefits from Afinitor Triple negative breast cancer cells are estrogen-receptor negative, progesterone-receptor negative, and HER2 negative. Since the cancer is not fueled by those hormones, nor by the HER2 protein, standard cancer drugs like selective estrogen receptor modulators, aromatase inhibitors, and Herceptin will not be effective in treating this class of cancer.
