Poses & Workouts

From Ann Pizer, your Guide to Yoga
After you get past your initial mastery of some basic yoga poses, where do you go? There's always a way to challenge yourself and deepen your experience of a pose, making it what my teacher likes to call "comfortably edgy." If you notice complacency has started to creep into your practice, try the following suggestions.

Deepen Your Knees in Utkatasana
No longer feeling the burn in awkward chair? Maybe it's time to deepen your knees. Before your bring your arms up, bend your knees and brush your finger tips across the floor. Keep your knees this deep and raise your arms.

Take the Bind in Side Plank
If your side plank has gotten a little ho-hum, move on to the full version, where you lift your top leg and grab your big toe. If that seems like a bit of a leap, you can try just lifting the top leg or bringing it into a tree position with the knee bent and the sole of your foot resting on the opposite thigh.

Take it to the Wall in Camel
In order to find your alignment in camel, take it over to the wall. Kneel down facing the wall with your thighs touching the wall. Reach back for your heels as you backbend, but keep the thighs and hip points on the wall. You may not be able to come into as deep a backbend, but your alignment will be safer and you will probably feel a quad stretch.

Pose of the Week - Extended Side Angle
In extended side angle, how dependent are you on the hand that's resting on the floor? If you'd probably topple over without it, experiment with easing some of your weight out of that hand and back into your legs. Lightening up on your bottom hand is going do wonders for your core too.
