From allergies to sinus infections, and from non-allergic rhinitis to acid reflux, learn about the causes of post-nasal drip -- and how to get rid of it.   Post Nasal Drip Post nasal drip can be caused by allergies, among other things. There are many causes of post nasal drip, or phlegm in the throat, which causes many people to frequently clear their throats. Causes of post nasal drip include allergic rhinitis, non-allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis. In addition, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may mimic post nasal drip. Approximately half of people suffering from allergies also have a non-allergic component to their symptoms. Unlike allergies, which can be a seasonal problem, symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis are typically year-round. Non-allergic rhinitis also tends to be more common as people age, whereas allergic rhinitis tends to affect children and young adults. Non-allergic rhinitis has many different forms. All About Sinus Infections Sinus infections, also called sinusitis, are defined as inflammation of one or more sinuses. Sinuses are hollow cavities within the bones of the face. The sinuses are lined by mucous membranes that normally produce fluid – this fluid usually drains into the nasal passages and is swallowed throughout the day. However, when the drainage sites for the sinuses are blocked, the sinuses cannot drain, and an infection may develop.
