Kids, I've learned, are honest creatures without all those silly adult concerns like good manners and being tactful. I was thinking about this when my grandmother told me about how one of my young nephews saw her and exclaimed, "Gosh, Maw Maw, you have like a million wrinkles! How can you even open your eyes?" A joyful reminder of just how much space separated his birth from hers.
These priceless (or excruciating, if you're the one on the receiving end of this honesty) moments of truth can often lead to a wake up call, particularly as it relates to one's weight (as in, "Wow, grandma, you got really fat!").
It's almost always better to ignore your first instinct (i.e., to shoot the poor, oblivious messenger) and look at this type of situation as a call to action, a chance for you to take control and make dramatic changes in your life.
There's less risk of going to jail that way.
