From Ann Pizer, your Guide to Yoga
One of the most common misconceptions about yoga asana that I encounter is that you have to be young, thin, and flexible to do it. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Every body can do yoga in some form, and benefit greatly from it.

Plus-Size Yoga Advice
I wrote this article on plus-size yoga to help yoga seem more accessible to a population that falls outside the popular image of the stick-thin yoga student. It's been really great to have readers chime in with their own experiences and advice here.

Yoga for Seniors
I love to see how many YMCA and senior centers are offering specialized classes for older adults. Some even have chair yoga classes for people who can't stand for long periods. While I certainly don't think older people have to segregate themselves, those beginning yoga for the first time can feel more comfortable in classes they know are designed with their needs at the fore.

Check Out Viniyoga
If you have concerns about trying a standard issue yoga class because of your specialized needs, look for a viniyoga class in your area. This style is based around the idea that every body is different and the practice should be adapted to each individual.

Pose of the Week - Forearm Stand - Pincha Mayurasana
Last week, my teacher went around the class and asked us each to pick two poses to work on: one pose you love and one that is challenging (we don't say "hate" in yoga class, but that was the jist). I've been loving the arm balances lately, but my inversions have felt like lead, so I picked firefly for my love pose and forearm stand for my challenge. Well, you can see where this is going, can't you? My firefly could barely get airborne but I flew up into that forearm stand as if supported by clouds. Lesson learned: it just doesn't do to get attached to what we can or can't do or what is easy and what is hard, both in yoga and in life. Realizing this helps loosen the tight grip we have on our expectations, which, in turn, can lead us to a less stressful existence.
