From Daniel More, MD, your Guide to Allergies
They fly. They swarm. They cause nasal allergies and asthma. Who are they? Asian ladybugs, of course! And in many parts of the Midwest and East Coast, they're invading homes and causing all sorts of allergy problems. Asian Ladybugs cause allergies as a result of the droppings and body parts they leave behind. In fact, over 20% of people visiting the allergist have positive allergy tests to Asian ladybugs; a rate nearly as high as for dust mites and cockroaches. So what can be done? First, find out if you're allergic. Next, learn measures to control your exposure to Asian ladybugs. Lastly, see your allergist for different treatment options available for Asian lady bug allergy.

Asian Lady Bug Allergy
Asian lady bugs, with the scientific name Harmonia axyridis, were released as a pest-control measure against aphids in many areas of the United States until 1990. These insects began to swarm inside houses in the late fall to protect themselves from freezing weather in the wintertime. Since then, large populations of Asian ladybugs can be found infesting houses in Wisconsin, Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, and along the East Coast to as far south as Georgia. Typically, rural and suburban homes are more commonly affected than homes in urban settings.

Dust Mite and Cockroach Allergy
Dust mites are microscopic creatures that live in our bedding, pillows and mattresses and eat human dead skin flakes and synthetic materials. Many people can be allergic to dust mite droppings. Luckily, dust mite allergens are typically not airborne; these allergens are heavy and fall to the bed, floor and furniture. People with allergy to dust mites notice late night and early morning allergic rhinitis symptoms, after inhaling the dust mite particles over several hours. Since dust mites live year-round, the allergy is not typically a seasonal problem.

How to Avoid Indoor Allergens
Avoidance of the causes of allergic rhinitis can often be the best way to prevent symptoms. There is essentially no cost, no medication side effects, and is essentially a curative approach for allergic rhinitis. Examples of at least partially avoidable allergens include pet dander and dust mites. However, avoidance of allergens is often difficult and not always possible. For example, plant pollens and mold spores are part of the outside air, and short of a person staying indoors all of the time, it is impossible to avoid exposure to these allergens. Once allergy testing reveals the presence of allergic antibodies to various triggers, an allergist may recommend avoidance of these triggers.
