Spring Allergy Season is on the Horizon!

In some parts of the country, spring pollen is just around the corner. In other parts of the country, like the Central California Coast where I practice, spring pollen allergy season is in full bloom. Tree pollen is the predominant cause of spring pollen allergy season, which in many parts of the country starts in February and early March. Find out about the common causes of spring allergy season to get a head-start on treatment.

Spring Allergies
Spring is the most common time of the year for people to experience seasonal allergy symptoms. As the weather gets warmer and plants start to bloom, trees and grasses release pollen into the air, triggering allergic symptoms in those with seasonal allergies. Colorful flowers also bloom in the spring, and are often blamed as the cause of spring allergies. In addition to plants, exposure to pet rabbits received as Easter presents may also be a reason why allergy symptoms can flare during the spring.

Pollen Counts
We’ve all seen the daily pollen count report on the news or in the newspaper. These reports (or more accurately, forecasts) give us some idea of how much pollen is present in the air. Levels of tree pollen, grass pollen, and weed pollen are reported most often as being “low”, “medium” or “high”. Occasionally, these reports give further details on which kinds of tree and weed pollens are present, such as oak tree pollen or ragweed pollen, for example.

Get Allergy Tested this Season!
Allergy testing measures how a person reacts to specific allergens, such as tree pollen, pet dander, foods, medications or molds. A "positive" allergy test means that a person has a specific allergic antibody to the substance tested. This often means that the person is allergic to the substance, meaning that the person will experience symptoms when exposed to the allergen.
